The Minnesota DNR classified Dead Lake as a Natural Environment Lake in 1975 giving it the most restrictive of ordinances in regard to building density, set back and lot size. The other two classifications are Recreational Development and General Development.
The lake is composed of three major basins and 102,179 acres of water-shed. Water and marshes represent 40% of the watershed.Dead Lake is the 33rd largest lake in the state, in a county with more lakes than any other in the United States. It consists of 36.3 miles of shoreline and four miles of island shoreline. The mean depth is 9.5 feet 83% of the lake’s acreage, or 6,537 acres, is littoral or 15 feet or less in depth.
